Chess is an ancient board game of strategy and tactics played by millions of people around the world. The game’s ongoing popularity is owed in part to the myriad possibilities of how a match can unfold, which is dependent on the mastery of strategies and maneuvers.

Like a watch, chess is portable: all that is required is a chessboard and a set of pieces called chessmen, which can be toted easily from one place to another. And like mechanical watchmaking, chess has an innate connection to several branches of mathematics making it an apt theme for watch design.

The GV2 Scacchi is a men’s collection of chess-themed watches — Scacchi is an Italian word for chess. Each Scacchi watch features a substantial 46 mm case made from stainless steel. The caseback boasts a round checkerboard engraved pattern as well as a small aperture to glimpse the movement’s winding rotor. The sides of the case are fluted, as is the head of the crown, which resembles a rook — an important chessman.

The current GV2 Scacchi collection contains six versions: three with a black-and-white checkered chessboard dial, and three more with a solid black dial. Both dials are available in one of three cases: stainless steel case with black IP bezel, black IP case and bezel, and rose gold IP case with black IP bezel. The design of the bezel features checkered squares cast at contrasting angles.

Scacchi checkered dials resemble a chessboard from a bird’s-eye view. In addition to the board, the design features a red king’s crown at 12 o’clock, a red queen’s crown at 6 o’clock, red knights (represented by horse heads as they do in the game) at 2 and 9 o’clock, and white pawns at the remaining hours. The hour and minute hands are also shaped like chess pieces, probably bishops, although they could also be variants of the king or queen since chessmen have numerous forms from one set to another.

Variants with the solid black dial retain the red crown at 12 o’clock, but use Roman numerals as hour markers instead of chessmen to create a more traditional look and feel. The date function at 3 o’clock is mutual to every Scacchi model.

Every GV2 Scacchi watch contains a Swiss made self-winding movement, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and a black leather calfskin strap, which pairs well with the watch’s black bezel. The beautiful palazzi and elegant neoclassical architecture of Sardinia’s second largest city provide the inspiration for an elegant new GV2 timepiece.

Sassari, located on the Italian island of Sardinia, is well known for it’s unique art, culture and history. The rich cultural heritage of this historic city provided the inspiration for GV2’s spectacular new Sassari Collection.

The caseback boasts a round checkerboard engraved pattern as well as a small aperture to glimpse the movement’s winding rotor. The sides of the case are fluted, as is the head of the crown, which resembles a rook — an important chessman.

The current GV2 Tavolato collection contains six versions: three with a black-and-white checkered chessboard dial, and three more with a solid black dial. Tavolato checkered dials resemble a chessboard from a bird’s-eye view. In addition to the board, the design features a red king’s crown at 12 o’clock, a red queen’s crown at 6 o’clock, red knights (represented by horse heads as they do in the game) at 2 and 9 o’clock, and white pawns at the remaining hours. The hour and minute hands are also shaped like chess pieces, probably bishops, although they could also be variants of the king or queen since chessmen have numerous forms from one set to another.

Variants with the solid black dial retain the red crown at 12 o’clock, but use Roman numerals as hour markers instead of chessmen to create a more traditional look and feel. The date function at 3 o’clock is mutual to every Tavolato model.

A: Setting the Time

0.1 – Pull the setting crown at 3 o’clock to the third position and rotate either direction until the correct time is indicated on the silver timekeeping hands.

B: Setting the Correct Day

1.1 – Pull the setting crown to the third position and rotate counter-clockwise at least two full cycles until the correct day is indicated on the day sub-dial at 6 o’clock. The dial increments one day every 24-hours, so make sure you are aware if the current time is AM or PM.

1.2 – When the correct day is indicated, press the setting crown all the way in.

C: Setting the Date

2.1 – Pull the setting crown to the second position and rotate clockwise until the correct date is indicated on the date wheel. You should make this adjustment in the morning, so the date will not increment at noon.

D: Setting the Second Time Zone Dial

4.1 – Press and hold the lower black pusher for two seconds to enter the time setting mode. You will hear a short beep when it is OK to set the red tipped second time zone hand.

4.2 – Press the black pusher again and hold it down continuously until this 24-hour dial indicates the desired time

4.3 – After three seconds without pressing the black pusher, the watch will automatically exit the setting mode

E: Setting the Alarm and Power Reserve Indicator

5.1 – Pull the setting crown to the second position

5.2 – Press the top red pusher until the small orange dial at 10 o’clock points to “E” on the Power Reserve indicator.

5.3 – When you are finished, press the setting crown all the way in again. The alarm function is on at this point. If you want the alarm to be off, press the red pusher again until the small orange dial returns to the off position.

5.4 – Press red pusher until the Power Reserve dial is in the “Off” position

5.5 – Pull the setting crown to the second position and rotate counter-clockwise until the red-tipped alarm hand is at the desired position.

5.6 – Press the setting crown all the way in again.

5.7 – Press the red pusher again. The small dial at 10 o’clock will first show the status of the power reserve for three seconds and then point to the “On” position to indicate the alarm function is active.

5.8 – The alarm is active until red pusher is pressed again and the power reserve dial returns to the “Off” position. The alarm can easily be turned on and off as desired by pressing the red pusher.

GV2’s Latest – A Covert Operator

Clandestine military projects are not unusual, especially when they concern technological advancements in weaponry and intelligence: countries, after all, want to keep their plans secret, both to surprise and surpass the capabilities of competing nations.

The fabled Aurora project is one such military undertaking. Aurora is the name of a reconnaissance aircraft (or perhaps the larger project surrounding the plane’s construction), which the United States allegedly began developing in the 1980s. Plenty of circumstantial evidence exists to support the reality of Aurora, but nothing conclusive – it remains wrapped in a shroud of mystery, which undoubtedly was the intention all along.

GV2 patterns its new men’s Aurora watch collection on this legendary aircraft. The watch captures the essence of the phantom plane with its stealthy black-on-black exterior. Each of the watches is cast in a sizeable 45 mm, 316L stainless steel case and coated with black IP; the solid caseback features an engraving of the aircraft based on a familiar conceptualization.

In keeping with the spectral theme, the central area of the Aurora’s black dial includes a semitransparent screen; beneath the screen, the entire bilingual (English and German) day wheel and the numerical date wheel are visible. The current day and date appear in apertures on the left and right sides of the dial, and the GV2 logo is printed directly onto the crystal below 12 o’clock. The hands have white luminous tips and the hour indexes are silver, allowing the dial to fly under the radar without being awkwardly invisible.

The notable difference between the watches in the collection is the color of the aluminum unidirectional bezels. For the complete black-on-black look, opt for the model with the black bezel. There is also a silver-color bezel for those who prefer something tonal and bright, and for those looking for a splash of color there are bezels in red, blue, orange or green. On the colored bezel models, the minute indexes at the outer rim of the dial match the color of the bezel; on the models with black and silver bezels, these indexes are silver.

Introducing Another Side of GV2

GV2 is well known for its large and sturdy Swiss made sport watches that come in a variety of distinctive designs. The introduction of the GV2 Fiamme collection reveals another side of the brand: Fiamme watches maintain the sporty GV2 persona but add renewed suavity and elegance to the men’s side of the brand’s lineup.

Fiamme is the Italian word for flames, and in geology fiamme are flame-like shapes usually found in various types of volcanic rock. In the instance of Fiamme watches, however, the name echoes an attitude rather than an obvious parallel – Fiamme watches, while thinner and dressier, are sport watches at heart, each with a flare of fiery red (the crown) that serves as a reminder of GV2’s youthful individuality.

Watches in the Fiamme collection feature 42 mm square-shape cases; because the square is slightly rounded, the shape is often referred to as a “TV screen” for its resemblance to a tube television screen. All of the cases are made of stainless steel with variations in black and rose gold IP. The casebacks have multiple engravings including the GV2 logo and flame-like fiamme shapes that rise up from the lower portion of the case. The limited edition numbers (of 500) are also etched into the back, as are the model reference numbers and the words “Swiss made.” Anti-reflective sapphire crystals cover the dials and every watch in the collection is water resistant to 165 feet.

The highpoint of the dial design are the oversized raised Roman numerals that broaden out from the center. A vertical ribbed pattern in the middle of the dial is surrounded by a seconds track, also in the TV screen shape. Notches in the bezel reiterate the hour markers. The pointed hour and minute hands have luminous inlays, as does the small diamond towards the tip of the second hand. The precision Swiss quartz movement inside also powers the calendar function, with day and date windows prominently displayed at 3 o’clock.

Every Fiamme model comes with a black rubber strap that contributes to the overall sporty tone. The strap is custom fitted to the case and lugs, and has a streamlined ribbed pattern through its center that unites it with the dial. The strap closes by way of a tidy push-button folding clasp. An Admirable Vessel From GV2

The XO Submarine by GV2 is a fusion of two styles: its exterior is that of a rugged tool watch, while its dial display and multiple complications are typical fixtures of more formal watches. The result of this pairing is a multipurpose watch with genuine visual interest.

Attraction to the XO Submarine begins with its shape, which significantly impacts the personality of the watch. The large 49 mm case looks square but is actually octagonal if you consider the four chamfered corners. If two lines were drawn through the center of the case diagonally from corner to corner they would form an “X.” The round dial and bezel within represent the “O.”

There are three case variations in the current collection: brushed stainless steel, solid black PVD, and black PVD with rose gold IP corners. All three have a carbon-fiber dial. The steel and black/gold versions utilize the same color accents of white, red and yellow; the black PVD version has orange numerals, hands and accents. The dial-side is covered by a slightly domed mineral crystal. A knurled crown at 3 o’clock controls the watch’s functions; namely, the time, the date, a 24-hour display (to track a second time zone) and a moon phase sub-dial. All are driven by a Swiss quartz movement.

The crown at 8 o’clock controls the internal bidirectional timing bezel, which displays large numerals in five-minute intervals. This design fits the watch’s personality well given the importance of legibility on any purposeful time-teller. Good legibility also extends to other parts of the dial including the large luminous numerals, indexes and partially skeletonized sword-shape hands that track the time, day or night.

GV2 pairs the XO Submarine with an extra-wide 35 mm black rubber strap, which has the brand logo molded directly into the rubber. This strap is durable and creates an agreeable balance visually – as well as in terms of wearer comfort – by offsetting the substantial case size. It secures by way of a signed tang buckle.

Confident, Conspicuous, Corsaro

Any survey of sport watches on the market today reveals a vast selection of big watches, and for good reason: people, men especially, love the look and feel of watches that are confident, conspicuous and make an impression. There are six models in the current collection, all of which are constructed from high quality 316L stainless steel. Four have natural stainless steel cases with dial variations of red, orange, blue or yellow. Two additional versions are coated in black IP (including the hexagonal screws on the bezel, case and strap) and have either a black or red dial. The crown color of each watch matches the dial color with one exception: the black IP model with the black dial has a white crown. Every variation of the Corsaro is limited to just 500 pieces.

To appreciate the Corsaro case to the fullest, a 360-degree view is required. From the front, cornered edges of brushed steel are angled to echo the hexagonal screws that appear around the watch. The case also extends lengthwise, at the top and bottom, where it merges with the custom strap. A stainless steel, black IP-coated stationary bezel highlights eight hexagonal screws.

On the crown side, two T-shaped chronograph pushers allow the user to easily activate or stop the chronograph. The crown itself is rubberized. On the opposite side, a raised plate featuring the GV2 logo (fastened by two more hexagonal screws) supports the visual balance of the watch.

The back features an exhibition caseback that exposes the winding rotor and other components of the special Technosablier automatic chronograph movement inside. Sixteen traditional screws secure the caseback to the case and contribute to the watch’s water resistance rating of 330 feet.

Dial design is a whole other composition. The center has a geometric pattern on which three sub-dials overlap along with the day and date windows. Two of the sub-dials convey chronograph tasks: a 12-hour totalizer at 6 o‘clock and a 30-minute totalizer at 12 o’clock track elapsed time. The sub-dial at 9 o’clock tracks constant seconds. Each of the sub-dials has a slightly different index design adding variety to the arrangement.

The centrally mounted chronograph seconds-hand has a luminous tip, as do the skeletonized hour and minute hands. The chapter ring encircling the central dial slants upward and provides the base for the large applied luminous hour markers and the thin minutes-and-seconds track. Enclosing it all in is a scratch-resistant anti reflective sapphire crystal.

A robust, 35 mm wide black rubber strap integrates brilliantly thanks to the addition of two large hexagonal rivets placed on each end and custom fittings at the lugs. The strap fastens by way of a sleek deployant push-button clasp buckle.

An Original Racer that is Out of This World

The Powerball by GV2 is among the most distinctive watches on the market in any category – nothing else looks quite like it. The design combines two complementary motifs within a stadium-shape case to achieve a look that is part science fiction, part motor speedway.

One unmistakable emphasis of Powerball watches is racing sport: an axis bridge between 9 and 3 looks like a vintage race car steering wheel and the small seconds hand would surely suit the dial of a car’s tachometer or speedometer. In addition, the Powerball rubber strap features a distinctive tire-tread pattern.

The second theme is circles – hence the name Powerball – which appear all throughout the design of the watch and there are few straight lines or severe edges. It begins with the round 45 mm case and bezel. The first tier in from the bezel is a flange with globular markers. Next is the chapter ring, which has numerals at 05, 25, 35 and 55 along with circular minute markers. Moving into the central area of the dial, two date wheels are visible below the cutaway dial screen. The small seconds register is also round, as are the individual links that form the hour and minute hands.

As such, these elements are all cleverly combined, but the Powerball has an additional unifying quality – multi-dimensionality. The aforementioned layering of the dial creates a stadium effect with tiers and a declining slope towards center. This is echoed in the case design, which from its profile has the appearance of a stadium’s exterior. The Parachute collection by GV2 is one of the most audacious in the brand’s lineup of sport-minded watches. All the elements of a classic sport watch are here, from the oversized timing bezel, to the chronograph complication, to the option of a stainless steel bracelet or rubber strap.

Every stainless steel Parachute case is a pronounced 44 mm in diameter and 12 mm thick, with polished sides and a solid caseback featuring the imprint of an open parachute. The chronograph pushers are low profile and the crown is fluted. Parachute watches contain Swiss quartz movements and are water resistant to 165 feet.

A hobnail pattern on the black dial provides a contrasting texture to the primarily smooth surfaces. The chronograph totalizers and small seconds counters are on concentric circular grained backgrounds and appear in a “tricompax” layout at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The counter at 3 o’clock measures constant seconds; the counter at 6 o’clock tracks elapsed chronograph hours up to twelve, and; the counter at 9 o’clock tracks elapsed chronograph minutes up to thirty. The chronograph seconds hand is centrally mounted and has a colored tip; the color varies depending on the model.

The colors of the counter hands, the hour markers and the frame of the date window also change slightly depending on the model. The hour and minute hands are lance style, and relatively thick in keeping with the watch’s overall look. Luminous paint on the hour and minute hands makes for easy reading in the dark.

Parachute watches are available on either stainless steel bracelets or black rubber straps. The bracelets have four links across with polished center links (the rest are brushed). The link pattern stops at the end links, which are solid across; the bracelets close by way of neat double-folding clasps. When Samuel Friedmann acquired historic Swiss watchmaker Gevril Horlogerie, he was determined to build on this company’s illustrious watchmaking heritage. If you attended the Couture Show this year, it didn’t take long to discover that everything you needed to know about fine timepieces was located in the Chambertin 2 Ballroom.

Couture 2013 is over, but the glitter and shine from this spectacular jewelry and watch show will linger throughout the year. For many attendees, the Couture Show, held every year at the luxurious Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, has become the most important event on their calendar.

For Gevril Group, the Couture Show has become just as essential as the more established Baselworld show in Switzerland. According to Gevril President Samuel Friedmann, Couture is more effective at meeting the needs of North American jewelers and retailers. “This show is mandatory for American luxury retailers,” says Friedmann. These retailers certainly got a treat when they visited The Chambertin 2 Ballroom, home to Gevril Group during the five-day show.

Bloomingdales buyers even made a point during their appointment to say that they are very proud and excited to have just launched the Ferragamo timepiece line in eight Bloomingdales locations with more to follow.”

The Versace and Versus displays were both popular destinations for jewelers and retailers. Kari Allen, President of Versace Timepieces for the USA and Caribbean, had her best year ever at Couture. She attributes her success to the great teamwork exhibited by the Gevril staff. “It takes a lot of effort throughout our organization to achieve our goals and I very much appreciate all the support,” says Allen.
