Traditions Renewed

New is old, and old is new again. Thus is the nature of fashion. Pulling the appropriate elements from previous designs and re-crafting them into something new is the art of the matter, and the designers at Glam Rock have a knack for doing it well.

The Glam Rock women’s two-tone model GR28031 from the Vintage Glam collection has several distinct characteristics that are interwoven to create a look that at once swoops back in time, but also stands firmly as a design for the here and now.

An oval case, measuring 40 x 30 mm, combined with orbicular teardrop lugs is the basis for this watch’s luxurious silhouette. The case is made of stainless steel and coated with yellow gold IP. Glam Rock’s familiar onion-style crown protrudes attractively.

Within the form-conscious casing is a white enamel dial, at the center of which is a textured pattern of dimpled diamonds. The centrally mounted, decorative hour and minute hands are coated in yellow gold IP to match the case. The Glam Rock font, used in the brand logo and to inscribe the dial with the collection name, is a script with throwback appeal. Large, black Roman numerals encircle the perimeter, surrounded in turn by a railroad track minute scale at the outmost edge of the dial.

A notable aside is the deference Glam Rock shows in its use of Roman numerals. Most watch brands replace the Roman numeral IV (four) with IIII, generally to create a visual balance with the opposing numeral VIII. But watches in the Vintage Glam collection use the correct IV in the 4 o’clock position – point scored for being faithful to the Roman numeric system and bucking an erroneous trend.

Watches in the Vintage Glam collection are offered with several different types of bracelets and straps. The one chosen for this model is an integrated-link bracelet in trendy two-tone stainless steel and yellow gold IP. It closes by way of a deployant clasp. Not only does the bracelet match up well with the case in coloring, it also provides contrast: the case has antique qualities whereas the bracelet is quite modern.

A polycarbonate mineral crystal fronts the case and the watch is water resistant to 165 feet. Inside, a Ronda 762 Swiss quartz movement keeps things beating. Like other Glam Rock watches, the GR28031 is Swiss made.

The Moon and Stars of Bal Harbour

When the European minds behind Glam Rock came up with an urban American motif inspired by one of the U.S.’s most upscale neighborhoods – Bal Harbour – the result was a series of watches infused with the animated opulence of its lush surroundings. While the 40 mm polished stainless steel case positively shimmers, it acts as a simple backdrop for the real star of the show – the celestial dial. At the dial’s center, a round cluster of 46 genuine white pavé diamonds sparkle in unison like a brightly lit moon. Orbiting the diamond cluster is a 24-hour-time track surrounded by natural mother of pearl, over which an additional 11 white diamonds serve as hour markers along with the Glam Rock crown logo at 12 o’clock. The chapter ring at the outside of the dial features small, delicate Roman numerals.

This three-hand watch (hours, minutes and small seconds) is driven by a quartz movement supplied by Swiss-based Ronda. Time adjustments are made by way of the onion-style crown. The stainless steel caseback is decorated, too, with a tortoise-acetate insert that looks good and feels smooth on the wearer’s wrist. Four screws hinge the caseback to the case, while on the front a coated mineral crystal protects the dial.

Many of the watches in the Bal Harbour collection come mounted on leather straps; the GR77061, however, is mounted on a polished stainless steel curb-link bracelet with a deployant buckle clasp. The combination of the gleaming case, dazzling dial and refined bracelet lift this watch to the heights of voguish wrist fashion.

Sophisticated Luxury Defined

No glossary of terms cites a definition for “sophisticated fashion watches,” but if one did, the watches of Glam Rock would surely be in the description. Glam Rock watches combine Italian design with French-made case covers and Swiss movements – the result is a lineup of watches with true European flair and quality.

Model number GR11158D, from the brand’s Miami collection, is a fine example and a watch that will certainly draw attention starting with its polished oversized 46 mm stainless steel case. The case cover (the bezel, essentially) is also stainless steel, with black enamel and diamonds – 52 genuine high quality white diamonds, to be exact.

Interchangeable case covers are a feature of many Glam Rock watches, including this one, and while few covers are more dynamic than this diamond-studded knockout, the ability to mix and match is an important Glam Rock ideology. Rounding out the case design are an onion-style crown and matching chronograph pushers, which add a stroke of antiquity. The caseback is stainless steel and affixes by way of six screws, and the watch is water resistant to 330 feet.

Another interchangeable feature is the strap, and Glam Rock straps are simply extraordinary. The brand goes out of its way to source its exotic leathers from French and Italian tanneries. The black strap on the GR11158D is genuine leather with a matelassé (pronounced “mat-la-say”) pattern, which gives it the quilted and padded appearance. A classic prong buckle completes the look.

Like others in the Miami collection, this model features a chronograph powered by a Swiss made Ronda quartz movement. The chronograph functions are expressed on the dial by way of the sub-dial totalizers that track elapsed minutes and hours up to 12. The white sub-dials contrast well atop the colorful mother-of-pearl and are thus easy to read. The movement also has a date function that appears in an unframed window at 4 o’clock. Large and playful Arabic hour numerals and teardrop hands add further panache and character to the already dazzling arrangement.
