When a watch company signs an ambassador to promote its watches, the individual usually becomes associated with models within previously established collections. Less often, a collection is named after the actual ambassador and designed with him or her in mind, which is the case with Viceroy’s Fernando Alonso collection.
Fernando Alonso is a two-time F1 racing World Champion. The young Spanish racing icon currently drives for Scuderia Ferrari and is among the very best drivers in the world. Take, for example, the Special Edition model pictured below. The watch features a chronograph: the most race-oriented complication in watchmaking since tracking elapsed time is so relevant in the way the sport is governed. The color combination of black, gray and silver has a universal sportiness, while two red accents draw attention to the center of the dial. The original Viceroy “Fa” logo aptly combines a checkered flag into the design and the words Special Edition indicate exclusivity. The hours and seconds hands on this model are skeletonized, as is the hand on the counter at 6 o’clock, which is in the shape of a racing-style steering wheel.

The 44mm case has an aerodynamic appearance with protruding tapered lugs, a feature common to all Fernando Alonso watches. Another shared characteristic of the collection is the cases, all of which are made from stainless steel and have an IP coating. An IP coating improves the watch’s scratch resistance, which speaks to the sport’s ruggedness and to the extreme speeds and conditions its driver’s face.
Another signature element of all the watches in the Fernando Alonso collection is the four hexagonal screws (reminiscent of lug-nuts that fasten a wheel to a car’s axle) that appear at the four corners of the case. The straps are integrated into the case by way of firm stainless steel adjuncts that extend from the case. The effect unifies the overall appearance of the watches. The straps are made from rubber, which aside from being practical, is decidedly motor-sport oriented due to the obvious connection to a race car’s tires, especially when the rubber is black.
Some models in the Fernando Alonso collection include a diving-style bezel for an additional sporty touch and women’s models are also available. The watches are water resistant to 165 feet, employ mineral glass for the front crystal and have personalized casebacks. The movements are quartz-powered to reflect accuracy and precision: the skills that F1 drivers must utilize to succeed in their demanding sport.
