The F-43 Jumping Hours watch comes in two versions: one with a black dial inscribed with hypnotic concentric white circles, and a skeletonized dial that reveals the jumping hour wheel and mechanism. Both versions of the Jumping Hours watch use the same movement and feature a jumping circular disc at 12 o’clock to indicate the hour. Minutes are indicated more traditionally, using a central minute hand. The beautiful minimal design is both innovative and easy to read.

Modern versions of vintage watches were popular at Baselworld 2012, with updated designs, movements and features that put new spins on old favorites. RSW also delivered a vintage model – La Neuveville (pronounced in three syllables: neu-ve-ville) – but unlike others, the RSW watch was not a revised version of a previous release but a new watch to commemorate a significant time and place in history.

La Neuveville is the name of the medieval city on the shore of Lake Biel in the Bernese Jura of Switzerland. It has been home to RSW since 2002. This year La Neuveville is celebrating its 700th birthday. To honor this auspicious anniversary and to pay tribute to its current home, RSW crafted a watch with a vintage feel that also includes elements of the brand’s contemporary makeup.

The design hearkens back to mid-20th century simplicity and elegance. The case is round and polished, as is the bezel, and the dressy lugs are curved with beveled edges. The watch is three-handed with a date function at 3 o’clock. The only numeral on the dial is a raised 12 marker. Other hours are indicated by geometric tetrahedrons or “triangular pyramids,” while an understated seconds track of black indexes appears along the outside. All three hands are polished and pointed, mirroring the inward pointed tips of the hour markers. The surface of the dial is decorated with a sunray pattern, adding texture and depth without compromising the vintage minimalism. Appearance of text on the dial is also intentionally sparse, limited to the brand name, the model and the word “automatic,” referring to the watch’s inner components.

Other than the 42 mm case size, one visible characteristic reveals that this watch is not of a bygone era: RSW’s patented crank crown. This recognizable and functional feature is not only original, it appeals to anyone with a fascination for mechanical watches. To operate the crank, first unscrew the traditional crown. Once unlocked from the case, the crown and handle fold up and function as a crank by which to wind the ETA 2824-2 movement inside. The experience of winding in this manner is both visual and tactile, connecting the wearer to the all-important aspect of owning a mechanical timepiece.

The automatic version shown here has a sapphire caseback. La Neuveville is also available with an ETA 955.112 quartz movement, solid caseback and standard winding crown. Both versions can be had in stainless steel or in yellow PVD-coated stainless steel, and both are available with or without diamonds. Every La Neuveville is fitted with a smart-looking leather strap and folding buckle that is as handsome as it is debonair.

The Small Seconds Power Reserve comes either in a limited edition of 80 pieces in 18k rose gold, or unlimited in steel. I had the pleasure of seeing both models at Baselworld, and the rose gold really gives a very warm yet elegant impression. It’s possibly the perfect watch to wear dressed in a suit, while the steel version has a bit of a classic appearance combined with a sporty more youthful feeling.

The clean dial layout increases legibility and ease on the eyes; the classic black roman numerals on the white dial reminds me of the elegance of an old Patek Philippe timepieces.

The 40 mm case is more than adequate in size, even today when many people like to wear large watches. The watch is water-resistant to 165 feet, enough to shower or swim while wearing it. Although, I personally wouldn’t submerge a watch that has a leather strap.

Louis Erard is expressing its vocations as a traditional watch “manufacture” developing modules such as the power reserve with exclusive in-house complications. Last but not least, the blued hands on the Small Seconds Power Reserve are to me a very special touch.

Reaching New Depths with the Edox Grand Ocean Chronodiver

The Chronodiver retains those classic details that have come to characterize Grand Ocean watches including the triple lug, fluted chrono pushers and crown, as well as the embossed wind rose centered on the dial. Several new design elements, however, set the Chronodiver apart from its predecessors.

Most notable of these elements is the unidirectional diving bezel made from stainless steel and smooth rubber. The bezel is easy to grasp and has a contemporary appearance, with customary indices and numerals appearing at five-minute intervals to allow a diver to track elapsed time. Stylish and practical, the combination of materials balances the overall design by uniting the black PVD-coated steel case, black rubber strap, ebony-black dial and luminescent silvered indices and hands. The dial also features raised rings encircling the counters and a large-date function at 12 o’clock that offers exceptional functionality for day-to-day wear. An anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal ensures these attributes always appear sharp.

Exclusive to the Chronodiver is an updated planisphere engraved on the back of the case. While planispheres are common to all Grand Ocean watches, the one on the Chronodiver is different in that it provides a view from the North Pole, which is like looking at the world from the top of a globe. The areas of land have a slightly different engraving surface than the areas of water for additional texture.

To complement Edox’s exceptional rubber strap, the Grand Ocean Chronodiver features a double-folding clasp, the outside of which is in the shape of a ship’s porthole with the Edox hourglass logo centered in the middle.

The Grand Ocean Chronodiver represents the best in Edox design, maintaining the collection’s renowned DNA but extending its reach well below the earth’s surface.

Like other Grand Ocean chronographs, the feminine silhouette of the Chronolady is equally unmistakable. The color of the dial is a soft snow-white accentuated by silvered hands and indices, and the ultra-feminine white rubber strap mounts smartly to the case composed of both brushed and polished stainless steel. Even with the chronograph counters, the dial is well-ordered. Other than white and black, the only hint of color is a spot of red on the tip of the perpetual seconds hand. The silvered hands are coated with luminous paint and small luminous dots appear on the hours. Fine touches include small fillets that accent the hands of the chronograph counters and the silvered frame that outlines the date.

Comfort is essential to the Chronolady’s allure. The white rubber strap is soft and pliable, the stainless steel double-folding clasp allows for quick sizing adjustments, and two keepers ensure the tail of the strap remains snug and secure for a seamless fit.

The caseback of the Chronolady reveals another detail – an engraved planisphere – that is shared by all Grand Ocean watches. The planisphere is Edox’s traditional way of connecting its Grand Ocean watches to water sports such as yacht racing by alluding to the world’s navigable oceans and waterways on a map. Defining the Modern Racing Watch

One significant difference between this Edox Chronorally, introduced earlier this month at Baselworld 2012, and previous iterations is that this is the first in the collection to feature a PVD coated case and buckle. The combination of PVD, carbon fiber and rubber typifies the modern paradigm of a racing watch. When fused with the famous Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement, the result is a motor-sports watch worthy of the WRC.

But it wasn’t enough for the designers at Edox simply to fit the new Chronorally with an outstanding automatic engine – they wanted to show it off. The watch therefore boasts an unusually large caseback window, nearly 36 mm in diameter, perfect for admiring what’s under the hood. From the rear view, a matching movement ring is visible; on the black model, the dial, start-stop pusher and movement ring are all black. The watch comes in two other variations: a blue dial with matching blue start-stop pusher and blue movement ring, and a red dial with matching red start-stop pusher and red movement ring. The cases of the blue and red models are constructed of polished and brushed stainless steel without a PVD coating.

The New Quattro Valvole 48 CLASSIC is as Close as You’re Going to Get to Wearing a Ferrari on Your Wrist

The Italians have always known a thing or two about speed and performance. Ferrari. Lamborghini. Ducati. These illustrious Italian brands are practically the definition of performance. Now, there’s a new high performance Italian on the scene: Meccaniche Veloci.

The Quattro Valvole is as big and bold as the racing engines its unique design evokes. The massive 48mm case is available in an aircraft grade 7075 aluminum alloy, as well as titanium, carbon fiber, carboceramic material and even solid gold encrusted with diamonds.

This case is equipped with a titanium crown for each of the four independent movements. Only the finest materials are used for straps, which are attached to the case by four titanium screws. The watch features a sapphire, anti-reflective crystal and is water resistant to a depth of 10 meters. You can wear the watch with either a traditional tongue buckle or a special titanium deployment clasp and the unique four time zone dial is available in several colors to suit your own personal taste.

This year the company, located in Le Noirmont, is having a birthday and what better way to celebrate than to give yourself and your customers a present. In honor of its 80th year, the brand has added Excellence to its portfolio, launching it at Baselworld 2011. With the addition of this line, Louis Erard now has a total of four collections: Excellence, 1931, Heritage and Emotion.

Neo-Classical Inspiration

Exemplified by the paintings of Jacques-Louis David, the Louis Erard Excellence line takes inspiration from the Neo-Classical period with its elegance and clean lines combined with modern details to reflect current tastes.

Choice of Styles

Within the collection are seven models: five for men and, not forgotten, women get two to choose from. The men’s include the Power-Reserve display and Regulator or simple Power-Reserve variations, a chronograph with moon phases and 24-hour indicator, and time-only iterations. All are offered in a 42mm steel or rose gold.

The ladies receive a sporting chronograph that is sprinkled with diamonds around the bezel, giving it some glam and sparkle. In a tri-compax layout, the dial with a window at 4 o’clock comes in white or white mother of pearl, while the 36mm case is in red gold or stainless steel—the look completed with a white leather strap.

All of the models are attractive, but the men’s piece that stands out is the regulator. The off-center hour indicator at 12 o’clock harmonizes well with the large seconds dial at 6 o’clock, while the power reserve provides a nice balance to the Louis Erard insignia at 3 o’clock.

Though the men have more styles to place on their wrist, these are so classic and pure that I wouldn’t be surprised if women took these 42mm as their own.

New Gevril Times Square Watch

Continuing in its tradition of designing timepieces which exude the personality, essence and namesakes of New York City landmark locations, Gevril aptly named its new pièce de résistance Times Square.

Not one to rush a new model to market before perfection is achieved, Gevril’s Samuel Friedmann explains: “Our new Times Square has been in the planning stages for quite some time. Although I’m very fond of all of my collections, the Times Square stands as a testament to how far Gevril has come as a brand, as well as to our ability to create time tracking wonders with technical innovations that rival the finest houses of horology anywhere.”

As with Gevril’s famed Avenue of Americas Collection, the Times Square is a “statement piece” featuring a well-designed 42mm square case. Due to its size, this is certainly not a watch that will go unnoticed; however its refined character will also appeal to those searching for a somewhat more understated look. The Times Square will be available in Classic, Sport and Luxury versions and will offer the collector a choice of complications: A triple-hand automatic powered by the very popular ETA 2892A2 movement featuring 28,800 vibrations per hour and 21 jewels, as well as Big Date versions in both Classic or Sport editions powered by the new ETA 2896 movement featuring 28,800 vibrations per hour and 22 jewels.

Gevril Form Every Bit as Good as Function

Gevril has incorporated the curved case architecture of the Avenue of Americas into the Times Square creating a wonderful custom feel on the wrist; this is where Gevril excels in making form every bit as good as function. A massive curved and beveled grade “A” sapphire crystal serves as the looking glass through which all will marvel at the watch’s charismatic dial. The fit and finish are impeccable from every viewing angle and are exemplified by the Times Square‘s seamless and fluid design. The curved exhibition caseback features a laser engraved “G” logo, and the timepiece is water resistant to 5 ATM.

The Times Square Sport edition features a minimalist black and gray dial accented with contrasting markers and Arabic numerals. A curved black titanium case is married to either a matching titanium bracelet or to a contoured high quality silicone strap. In this version Gevril has expanded the Big Date window to allow for date pre- and post- views of up to 3 days.

The Times Square Luxury version is all about refinement. While possessing the same mechanics as its Sport counterpart, it breaks rank and captures the elegance of its paternal Avenue of Americas, featuring a classically decorated and textured dial, as well as exaggerated Arabic numerals.

The Gevril Times Square Collection will be available in either 316 Stainless Steel or 18K Rose Gold except for the Sport edition that will be available exclusively in Titanium. Prices will start at $3,495 and reach $24,990, depending on case metals and band. Each edition will be limited to just 250 pieces.
