Dating back to 1816, the chronograph is one of the most useful complications in a watch even centuries after its invention. It was first developed by Louis Moinet and applied to astronomical equipment. Five years later it was commercialized by Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, who designed one for King Louis XVIII in 1821 to time horse racing.

Even though the chronograph is a sporty complication, it can exude class and sophistication. A Fitting Salute to 1931

In 1931 Louis Erard and his eponymous Swiss company began making watches. Eighty years later the brand introduced its 1931 collection to pay homage to those early days. The 1931 collection includes watches that illustrate much of what was important to the brand then, and now: they balance tradition, sophistication and dependability. The Vintage Chronograph Reference 78 225 AA 01, a limited edition of 500 pieces, is a fine example.

Louis Erard uses mechanical movements in its watches. The Vintage Chronograph contains the Swiss made ETA Valjoux 7750. For anyone unfamiliar, the 25-jewel Valjoux 7750 is among the most widely used automatic chronograph movements today. It operates by way of a three-cam system (as opposed to a column wheel) and is noted for being reliable and easy to service. In addition to the chronograph function, it features a quick-set day and date.

To get a glimpse of the 7750 in action, simply turn the watch over: the movement, including the customized oscillating weighted rotor with Geneva Stripes decoration, is visible through an exhibition caseback. The caseback also features the watch’s limited edition number (008/500) engraved into the case.

Configuration of the sub-dials is characteristic of the 7750 movement, with 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers at 12 and 6 o’clock respectively, and a running small-seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The day and date apertures appear at 3 o’clock.

The dial itself is balanced, tasteful and well detailed. The use of railroad-track-patterned rings is both visually stimulating and useful in delineating the sub-dials; i.e., the small-seconds track has 60 indexes whereas the indexes of the chronograph sub-dials are spaced wider apart to record minute and hour increments; the dial’s outer track measures passing minutes and chronograph seconds. Serifed Arabic numerals, blue hands and arrowheads add strong vintage appeal.

A few modern attributes indicate that this Vintage Chronograph is in fact a contemporary piece. For one, the stainless steel case is 42.5 mm in diameter (vintage watches are typically smaller), and the crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Elegances include curved and polished lugs, a polished bezel and crown, and polished caps on the chronograph pushers. The attractive black leather padded strap features cream stitching and a prong buckle.

The chronograph is comprised of a central seconds hand, a 30-minute totalizer at 12 o’clock and 12-hour totalizer at 6 o’clock. The sub-dial at 9 o’clock is home to the constant seconds register and the GMT function, which features a hand with an arrowhead pointing to a corresponding 24-hour scale.

Three separate apertures within the other two sub-dials display the day, date and moon phase. The pointer-date hand stems from the central pivot and has a crescent shaped tip that edges the date printed on the rehaut. (Quick corrections of the day, date and month are easily managed with inset pushers on the side of the case.)

On the dial, thin Roman numerals, some of which are pruned by the sub-dials, allow the dial to remain bright and open. The Romans also create an air of antiquity, as do the blued hands. Recessed sub-dials also contribute to the well-ordered design. The dial is a silvered white and covered by a large sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

The exquisite polished case is made of a full 70 g of 18k rose gold and measures 42 mm in diameter; its design is marked by simplicity, as any fine dress watch should be. The lugs, too, have no extraneous parts and jut purposefully from the case to accommodate the genuine crocodile leather strap, which has an 18k rose gold pin buckle. The caseback, also in rose gold, is secured by four screws and decorated with the emblem “LE” embossed in a script font along with the commemorative year “1931″.

Because the dive watch is such a popular choice of tool watch, the Flieger, which is also a tool watch, could be overlooked as wrist wear that offers an alternate and very sleek style. The German’s developed the Flieger, which is German for pilot’s watch, in World War II for their pilots as an instrument for navigation in the cockpit. Five companies fulfilled the contract: Lange & Sohne, International Watch Company, Laco, Stowa and Wempe.

As required, Arabic numerals punctuate the dial in a size large enough to easily see without overwhelming the dial. Man has been fascinated by flight since he first gazed up into the heavens. Many tried before them, but brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright got the first aircraft legitimately off the ground in 1903. Timing is crucial to aviation, for navigation, but fumbling for a pocket watch was inconvenient. In the world of tool watches, toughness is a necessity. If you’re in space, underwater or just roughing it up on land, you can’t have a delicate watch that acts up especially when put under harsh pressure. Fortis knows this and built their reputation on making timepieces that go above and beyond what the environment demands. For example, in 1994 Fortis decided to prove their claims by pushing their watches to the limits of modern physics.

The timepieces kept their composure, a testament to their solid construction. Fortis put its money where its mouth was and the Star City Training Center located in Star City Russia took notice. Fortis has a long history of producing chronographs, starting in 1937 when they released their first one in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the company. This year Fortis put out a dive watch with a chronograph that is right on trend with orange accents. If you take a look at the offerings at Basel this year, orange was one of the colors that many of the brands highlighted. New Stripes for an Enduring Classic

One thing that gets some collectors excited is a new variation of a favorite watch. Fresh colors have the ability to revitalize a design and breathe contemporary air into a classic look. The latest version of the Fortis B-42 Marinemaster Chronograph mixes black and yellow – a popular color combination found in nature, in fashion and in design the world over, not to mention in watch collections from brands both large and small.

The rugged three-part case is constructed of brushed stainless steel and measures 42 mm in diameter. The unidirectional turning bezel is both a visual and functional highlight: the combination of black and yellow is eye-catching, while the deep scalloped edges provide good grip for turning, especially underwater, where the watch is water resistant to a depth of 660 feet. There is more to the bezel: unlike most dive bezels, this one makes a full turn in 120 increments, meaning it is adjustable in half-minute steps. The pip positioned on the bezel at 12 o’clock is luminous and has a blue afterglow.

Functional aspects of this Marinemaster do not end there. The crown is substantial enough to grip and is personalized with the Fortis logo; the chrono pushers are firmly inset and well protected. Adding to the watch’s water resistance is a screw-down caseback, which is embossed with a historic Fortis motif. On the front, anti-reflective sapphire crystal provides a clear and scratch-resistant pane.

To a novice, the dial of the Fortis 671.24.14 K B-42 Marinemaster Chronograph watch might seem crowded, but it is actually clear and easy to read thanks to the sharp contrast between the white, yellow and black elements. The layout of the sub-dials is based on the Valjoux 7750 movement with a 30-minute totalizer at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour totalizer at 6 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. These stand out next to the yellow hour numerals. Toward the outside of the dial is the minute-and-second track as well as a tachymeter scale, which is positioned on the angled flange. The hands, hour markers and indices are all coated with Super-Luminova, which glows blue in the dark. The central chronograph seconds hand also has a luminous circle half way up the hand.

A tidy set-up on the dial at 3 o’clock includes the Fortis logo as well as the day and date. Both stand out well on white backgrounds. Changing the day or date is a breeze on this watch because the two arrowheads on either side of the day and date windows – one facing down and one facing up – indicate which direction the wearer should turn the crown to make quick adjustments. They might seem superfluous, but the arrowheads are convenient reminders and, in design terms, echo the shape of the traditional arrowhead index at 12 o’clock – which appears in deference to Fortis’s aviation style watches.

Since the B-42 Marinemaster Chronograph is a seagoing watch at heart, Fortis mounts the watch on a black rubber strap that fastens by way of a brushed steel folding clasp featuring the Fortis logo. But there are options to mix it up; namely, a black leather strap or steel bracelet.

Renewed, Recharged, and Totally Retro

Popular culture steers people to explore new and different trends. But some designs continue to work – decade upon decade – and those labeled “classic” always return to favor. Such is the case with the Fortis Marinemaster watch, originally released in the 1940s. The Marinemaster remained in the Fortis lineup for decades, and the Marinemaster Chronograph was popular well into the 1970s when the quartz movement revolution forced the watch industry to rethink its mechanical future. The industry bounced back in a big way, as did many of the classic watch designs of the 20th century.

Today, reconnecting with classic watches of bygone eras is as popular as ever. The Fortis Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph watch is true to the look of its predecessor in most ways including the shape of the lugs, the piston-style chronograph pushers and the unidirectional, graduated dive bezel. Similarities extend to the dial, too, including the orange sub-dials; the two-tone 30-minute sub-dial; the shape of the hands and hour markers; the minutes-and-seconds track, and the tachymeter scale at the outside of the dial.

Enthusiasts will note that the position of the 30-minute counter and the 60-second counter are reversed compared to the ’70s iteration, which is a result of the configuration of the new automatic movement – the Fortis caliber F-2020 – an ETA 2892-A2 base with a Dubois Depraz 2020 chronograph module.

Other than the upgraded movement, the most notable difference is the watch’s exhibition caseback that provides a view of the movement in action. The water resistance of the Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph is 165 feet (less than the original, which was over 650 feet).

The three-part case is made of stainless steel and measures 40 mm in diameter. Another nod to the original is the inclusion of domed acrylic on the front that is made of PMMA – the same type of acrylic that was used before the advent of synthetic crystal. The watch is mounted on a black calfskin strap with white stitch and employs a traditional clasp buckle.

If the reliability of a modern watch is more appealing than the quirks of vintage, or a vintage model simply eludes capture, consider the Fortis Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph watch. The Melding of Classic and Contemporary

There is distinctive charm in wearing a watch made by a relatively unfamiliar brand, especially when that brand has the cachet of a headquarters and workshop high in the famous Jura Mountains watchmaking region of Switzerland, and a commitment to making “Swiss Made” watches.

High Flyer or History Buff, This Chrono Delivers

Flieger is the German word for pilot, or airman. In English, the word “flieger” is commonly associated with pilot watches; this is, in part, because Germans were among the first to design pilot-centric watches for the civil aviation sector in the 1930s, but also because many of the definitive look-and-feel characteristics of modern pilot watches can be attributed to German manufacture.

The Fortis Flieger Automatic Chronograph is a fine example of a modern airman’s watch. The two-part case is 40 mm in diameter and made from sandblasted stainless steel. The caseback is screw-down and stamped with the Fortis emblem. Scratch-resistant anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial and allows for an ample view of the counters and hands thanks to the narrow bezel. A large knurled crown, stamped with the Fortis crown emblem, makes adjusting the watch effortless; the chronograph pushers are equally stout and straightforward to operate.

In its day, the primary significance of the arrowhead index and flanking dots at 12 o’clock on the dial was to provide upward orientation of the dial during night flight. For pilots, it still does, and for non-pilots, the ubiquitous index appears as an essential design element. The black dial features Arabic numerals and indices coated with Super-LumiNova phosphorescent paint for excellent illumination in the dark. Luminous paint also appears on the sword-shaped hour and minute hands, whose relative thickness width-wise makes it easy to read the time over top of the sub-dials.

Since function is the chief purpose of a pilot watch, the chronograph hands on the Fortis Flieger are all painted orange; this way the elapsed seconds, minutes and hours can be calculated with relative ease. The distinct positioning of the sub-dials suggests that this flieger contains a Valjoux 7750 movement, and indeed it does. The distinctive layout has the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, the 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, and the continuous-seconds counter at 9 o’clock. Two apertures placed side by side at 3 o’clock display the day and date.

To accommodate the three-plate Valjoux 7750 movement, the case is 15 mm thick and water resistant to 330 feet. A complementary padded black leather strap with white stitching draws out the white-on-black contrast of the dial. The prong-style buckle is personalized with the Fortis emblem.

A Match Made in Flight: The Fortis B-42 and the Valjoux 7750

Before pilots had chronographs integrated into their wristwatches, they typically carried separate stopwatches for use in navigation. When the time-only wristwatch was eventually combined with a chronograph, pilots were able to satisfy both functions with one device.

Fortis fuses these two primary functions in its Fortis B-42 Pilot Professional Chronograph from the company’s aviation collections, and what better movement to salute this match made in flight than the famed Valjoux 7750, the veritable workhorse of mechanical chronographs, which like the pilot watch, is renowned for its function-over-form simplicity.

The Valjoux 7750 was introduced in 1974 and features prominently in contemporary chronographs. It differs from the traditional column-wheel chronograph in that it uses a different mechanism to control the switching functions, which include starting, stopping and resetting. The significant advantage of the 7750’s design is in efficiency, both in terms of ease of assembly and ease of maintenance.

Fortis customizes the winding rotor of this Valjoux 7750 with blue engravings including the Fortis logo; the words Since 1912 Swiss commemorate the company’s founding year, while World’s First Manufacturer of Automatic Wristwatches commemorates one of the company’s finest achievements. All of this can be viewed through the watch’s exhibition caseback.

To accommodate the movement’s three-plate construction (main plate, calendar plate and chronograph plate), the two-part stainless steel case is 42 mm in diameter by 16 mm thick. The sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on both sides and the caseback is screw-down. The oversized, screw-down crown adds to the watch’s overall water resistance of 660 feet.

The distinctive chronograph counter layout of the Valjoux 7750 has the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, the 30-minute counter at 12, and the continuous-seconds counter at 9. The chronograph hands, meanwhile, are painted orange so that elapsed seconds, minutes and hours can be calculated with relative ease.

White numbers and indices provide excellent contrast against the matte, black dial. Plenty of Super-LumiNova coats the numerals, hour markers and hands. In addition to the traditional arrowhead index and flanking dots at 12 o’clock, two other arrows appear on either side of the day and date windows – one facing down and one facing up – to indicate which direction the wearer should turn the crown to make quick adjustments. The flange has a tachymeter scale for measuring speed in conjunction with the chronograph.

This Fortis B-42 Pilot Professional Chronograph features a padded cognac-brown leather strap with white stitching that brings the black, orange and white dial elements to the fore. The strap is fitted to the case and the prong-style buckle is personalized with the Fortis crown.

This chronograph features an automatic ETA 7750 movement which is the workhorse of Swiss made watch movements, as it is very reliable and durable. The stainless steel case is complemented by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, which in combination with the Arabic numerals and round indices delivers excellent readability while at he same time displaying the day and date at 3 o’clock.

The case of this chronograph measures a popular 43 mm. Most timepieces today are over 40 mm in size, and quite a few even over 45mm. I even see a lot of women sporting such large timepieces on their wrists. I remember about 10 years ago, when I saw a young lady wearing a Submariner which is 40 mm in size, and back then I thought “oh my gosh, how can she wear such a big watch!?” Well, now, she could even wear a 44mm watch and would just fit the actual fashion trend of “big is beautiful“ when it comes to watches.

A Luxurious Take on Modern Vintage

The Avenue of the Americas, or Sixth Avenue, is a stately commercial thoroughfare that runs northbound through the heart of New York City. Among the numerous buildings that line the street are those of the famed Rockefeller Center, which include several of New York’s architectural gems built in the art deco style of the 1930s. Mechanically, the 5110 houses Gevril’s GV AOAWZ1, 51-jewel automatic chronograph movement based on an ETA 2824-2 and featuring a Dubois Dépraz 2020 chronograph module. In addition to customizing the bridges and the rotor, Gevril alters the chronograph pusher mechanism to accommodate the rectangular case. The movement can be viewed through the crystal of the exhibition caseback, which, like the front crystal, is made of scratch-resistant sapphire. The watch is water resistant to 160 feet and has a power reserve of 40 hours.

Cue the watch engineers at Edox and the new Edox Miss Geico Racing Limited Edition Chronograph.

Edox is an official team sponsor of Miss Geico Racing. The timepiece company introduced the Edox Miss Geico Racing Limited Edition Chronograph in 2011 with the ambition of capturing the spirit of the Miss Geico offshore powerboat in every respect, from precision to performance.

The Miss Geico is one of the most recognizable offshore powerboats in the water: a bright yellow, 50-foot-long, twin-turbine Mystic catamaran, 4,000 horsepower, capable of reaching speeds in excess of 210 mph. The watch also boasts an eye-catching exterior including a yellow strap, which creates an instant connection. Under the hood, the Miss Geico chrono houses an extremely efficient engine – Edox’s Calibre 103 movement, which is based on a Ronda quartz movement featuring a battery with an ultra-long lifespan of an estimated four-and-a-half years. When the crown is pulled out, a power-saving mechanism further reduces the demand on the battery by a whopping 70 percent.

Several materials are integrated into the watch’s build. The 45 mm case is made of 316L stainless steel and coated with black PVD. The caseback is engraved with a Class 1 racing propeller, a special Miss Geico Racing design and the individual watch number. The dial features black, carbon fiber with white hour indices at each hour except “12,” where a yellow double-marker appears instead. Below it is the Edox logo, the Miss Geico Racing logo and the boat’s number “113,” which is applied in the same style as it appears on the powerboat. The dive bezel is made of black ceramic and features four hourglass-shaped stainless steel rivets. The Edox hourglass logo is embossed on the yellow (it also comes in black) rubber strap, which is shaped and fitted to the lugs. Like the case, the folding clasp is made of stainless steel and coated with black PVD.

As for function, the chronograph has a central-seconds hand and a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock. The counter at 9 o’clock has a perpetual small-seconds hand. Both counters are outlined in yellow, as is the date window at 6 o’clock. The date ring (on which the date numbers appear) features a black background and yellow numerals that perfectly match the dial. A tachymeter circles the outside of the dial.

Excellent water resistance is expected for any watch associated with water sports and the Miss Geico chrono delivers and then some. The case is pressurized, the crystal is a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective synthetic crystal, and the crown and chronograph pushers are all screw-down ensuring supreme water resistance down to 3,000 feet.

One final trait that the Miss Geico chrono shares with its powerboat namesake is exclusivity: production is limited to just 113 pieces worldwide. Each watch is individually numbered from 001/113 to 113/113 on the engraved caseback and comes with an official certificate guaranteeing its authenticity.

I remember Louis Erard as one of the classic mechanical Swiss watch manufacturers. Many years ago, I set my eye on a particular Louis Erard timepiece, and although I never acquired it, I have this watch on my mind should I come across it again.

The new Louis Erard Héritage Chronograph combines classic and elegant watch design with fine mechanical refinement. The beautiful movement can be viewed through the see-through caseback. Inside of this Chronograph is a highly reliable Valjoux 7750 Swiss automatic movement ticking away, which is considered to be the workhorse of Swiss watchmaking, especially for chronographs.

This timepiece possesses a 40mm case without the crown. The dial shows the day and date, which I find a very useful function. In addition, there are three gauges. The gauge at 12 o’clock shows the passing minutes of the chronograph while the gauge at 6 o’clock shows the passing hours of the chronograph. The lug width is 21 mm, a bit larger than usual as most 40mm timepieces have a lug width of 20 mm. The case thickness of this chronograph is 13.5 mm.

The orange skeleton hands and numbered indices give the watch a flair of Hermes, an indescribable elegance similar to the orange color which Hermes uses on its boxes and bags. This orange accent represents an elegant contrast to the grey dial and increases legibility.

The unidirectional, semi-ceramic, semi-steel bezel is now two-tone and the new decor facilitates its handling. The steel case has been redesigned with squarer horns and with a new, sharper profile.
