One Refined Flieger

Fortis pilot watches debuted in the 1980s and helped define a new generation of functional timepieces, with a distinct style that combined 40 mm cases and black dials, along with green tritium luminous material applied to large hands and hour markers. Germany’s aircraft developers commissioned the popular and beautifully constructed Flieger watch, German for flight, during World War II for German bomber pilots. Also known as Beobachtungs-Uhren or navigators watches, they had to meet stringent standards for visibility, durability and accuracy. Despite the less than auspicious reasons for the creation of the Flieger watch, it resulted in a functional timepiece of enduring design.

The Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger Big Day Date, produced in a limited edition of 2,012 pieces, is a modern interpretation of the original Flieger watch, incorporating all of its best elements while accommodating it for civilians. According to German specs, two dial configurations were acceptable. The Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger is inspired by the Type A, which has a much cleaner layout. Large illuminated white Arabic numerals sit on a black sunray embellished dial surrounded by a white baton minute track that also references the time in 24-hour increments. The Fortis emblem and crown are situated below the 12 o’clock position.

Characteristic of all pilot watches (and really a must), the Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger uses an illuminated triangular marker surrounded by two illuminated dots to represent 12 o’clock. The reason for this original design choice was so pilots could orient the watch at night. While some Flieger watches update the hands, the Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger keeps the illuminated sword shaped configuration with the hour hand thicker to differentiate it from the minutes hand. Fortis added a convenient modern touch to the dial with the big day at 9 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock. Mirroring the triangle at 12 o’clock, another resides along side the date, which works for both functionality and aesthetic purposes.

The Flieger watches used by the German bomber pilots were huge, clocking in at 55 mm. This was because they housed hand wound pocket watch movements. This size worked because a larger movement gave more space on the dial, which translated into more visibility, but also because the watches had to strap over a bulky flight suit and not get lost in the material.

Since a 55 mm watch is not realistic or practical for daily wear, Fortis placed the F-43 Flieger 700.10.81 L.01 in a 43 mm stainless steel case that hits the sweet spot for contemporary watches. A black calfskin strap with contrast stitching attaches to the case and secures with a deployant push button clasp.

One of the most crucial elements of a pilots watch was accuracy. Known for their robust and precise movements, Fortis placed a Swiss automatic movement with a shock absorber in the Fortis F-43 Flieger 700.10.81 L.01, which is on display through the exhibition caseback. As moisture is one of the most dangerous enemies of a movement, the watch is water resistant to 660 feet.

Fortis has a deserved reputation for producing watches for professional use, particularly in space. They are probably most known for their Cosmonauts watch. Because the dive watch is such a popular choice of tool watch, the Flieger, which is also a tool watch, could be overlooked as wrist wear that offers an alternate and very sleek style. The German’s developed the Flieger, which is German for pilot’s watch, in World War II for their pilots as an instrument for navigation in the cockpit. Five companies fulfilled the contract: Lange & Sohne, International Watch Company, Laco, Stowa and Wempe.

Inspired by the Flieger, the new Fortis 701.10.81.K F-43 Flieger Chronograph limited edition watch uses a classic layout on a black dial. A Flieger watch is a pilot’s or aviator’s watch that was developed in 1942 in Germany for pilots during the World War II to assist in navigation. The original brands commissioned by the German government to make these watches were Lange & Sohne, International Watch Company, Laco, Stowa and Wempe.

Man has been fascinated by flight since he first gazed up into the heavens. Many tried before them, but brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright got the first aircraft legitimately off the ground in 1903. Timing is crucial to aviation, for navigation, but fumbling for a pocket watch was inconvenient. Flying pioneer Albert Santos-Dumont sought the help of his friend Louis Cartier, who made the Cartier Santos wristwatch just for the purpose of flying and the aviation watch was born.

You don’t have to be a cosmonaut and go to space in a shuttle to get a watch capable of withstanding a walk on the moon; you can wear the Fortis 647.27.11 M B-42 Official Cosmonauts Day/Date Titanium watch. Not many people know that Fortis has a long heritage of over 100 years of continued manufacturing and many accolades to its name. Walter Vogt established the company in 1912 and in 1924 partnered with John Harwood, inventor of the automatic wristwatch. They released the first self-winding wristwatch in 1926 called the Harwood Automatic. By 1937, Fortis moved into chronographs, releasing their first one for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the company.

Fortis has built their reputation on producing tough, functional watches that are equal to standing up to punishing environments. In 1994, Fortis put its watches through such rigors of testing that pushed the boundaries of modern physics that the Russians came calling. The Russian training facility for cosmonauts located in Star City Russia chose the watch, now called the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph, as part of their official equipment. The watch was put through the paces inside the shuttle and in space, proving its muster by keeping time like the day it was born.

Because of the association with the Russian cosmonauts, the Fortis name might initially bring up the idea of a space watch, but the brand has also mastered other environments such as aviation and maritime.

As required by all dive watches, the hands and numerals are swathed in luminescent material. In a stainless steel case covered in PVD, the watch has a very stealthy look that will blend right in by land or over a wetsuit.

Fortis has been in the space watches game since the 1960’s when the space programs were in their infancy, so you know Fortis has a special expertise in these type of watches. Created back in the 60’s, the Spacematic models are different in their form and function—they would have to be in order to take the beating of the unusual zero gravity environment. How good are the Fortis space watches? Fortis chose a Swiss made ETA 2836-2 automatic movement to drive the mechanics for its robust reliability. Especially in space, accurate timing is a must. If you’re in space, underwater or just roughing it up on land, you can’t have a delicate watch that acts up especially when put under harsh pressure. New Stripes for an Enduring Classic

One thing that gets some collectors excited is a new variation of a favorite watch. Fresh colors have the ability to revitalize a design and breathe contemporary air into a classic look. The rugged three-part case is constructed of brushed stainless steel and measures 42 mm in diameter. The unidirectional turning bezel is both a visual and functional highlight: the combination of black and yellow is eye-catching, while the deep scalloped edges provide good grip for turning, especially underwater, where the watch is water resistant to a depth of 660 feet. There is more to the bezel: unlike most dive bezels, this one makes a full turn in 120 increments, meaning it is adjustable in half-minute steps. The pip positioned on the bezel at 12 o’clock is luminous and has a blue afterglow.

Functional aspects of this Marinemaster do not end there. The crown is substantial enough to grip and is personalized with the Fortis logo; the chrono pushers are firmly inset and well protected. Adding to the watch’s water resistance is a screw-down caseback, which is embossed with a historic Fortis motif. On the front, anti-reflective sapphire crystal provides a clear and scratch-resistant pane.

To a novice, the dial of the Fortis 671.24.14 K B-42 Marinemaster Chronograph watch might seem crowded, but it is actually clear and easy to read thanks to the sharp contrast between the white, yellow and black elements. The layout of the sub-dials is based on the Valjoux 7750 movement with a 30-minute totalizer at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour totalizer at 6 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. These stand out next to the yellow hour numerals. Toward the outside of the dial is the minute-and-second track as well as a tachymeter scale, which is positioned on the angled flange. The hands, hour markers and indices are all coated with Super-Luminova, which glows blue in the dark. The central chronograph seconds hand also has a luminous circle half way up the hand.

A tidy set-up on the dial at 3 o’clock includes the Fortis logo as well as the day and date. Both stand out well on white backgrounds. Changing the day or date is a breeze on this watch because the two arrowheads on either side of the day and date windows – one facing down and one facing up – indicate which direction the wearer should turn the crown to make quick adjustments. They might seem superfluous, but the arrowheads are convenient reminders and, in design terms, echo the shape of the traditional arrowhead index at 12 o’clock – which appears in deference to Fortis’s aviation style watches.

Since the B-42 Marinemaster Chronograph is a seagoing watch at heart, Fortis mounts the watch on a black rubber strap that fastens by way of a brushed steel folding clasp featuring the Fortis logo. But there are options to mix it up; namely, a black leather strap or steel bracelet.

A Most Venerable Watch Complication Renewed

Analog watches tell time by way of hands that move in a circular motion. A “jump hour” complication replaces the traditional hour hand with a window through which the numerical hour is displayed. When the hour advances, the window (or the disc below it) makes an instant jump to the current hour.

Jump hour watches are not only appealing from a horological point of view; they are also functional, because reading the time using this configuration is unambiguous. In the hands of skilled watchmakers, the jump hour complication also presents opportunities to conceive of new and interesting arrangements such as the Fortis B-47 Mysterious Planets timepiece, introduced last year.

This year, at Baselworld 2013, Fortis introduced its latest jump hour model – the F-43 Jumping Hour – a watch that highlights the complication with artful simplicity. Like the B-47 before it, the F-43 Jumping Hours houses the Fortis F-2024 automatic movement, comprised of a highly modified ETA base with the jump hour mechanism added entirely by Fortis. A small portion of these components are visible through the dial; a wider view of the movement is visible through the glass caseback. The F-2024 employs 21 jewels and an Incabloc shock absorber. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour.

But the dial is where the spectacle of the jump hour complication plays out. A matte-textured, smoky-gray disc covers a better part of the dial. Through its translucent surface, Arabic hour numerals appear on the dial plate below. The current hour is displayed through the circular aperture on the disc. When the hour changes the gray disc rotates clockwise, while the centrally mounted minute hand continues its customary rotation around the dial. Design details include chrome hour markers as well as a thin chrome frame around the aperture.

The watch’s two-part case is 43 mm in diameter and made of brushed stainless steel. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating applied to both sides protects the dial side of the watch; the caseback screws down adding to the watch’s water resistance to a depth of 656 feet. The large crown is characteristic of many Fortis Space and Aviation models and features the Fortis logo. Each watch in this 500 piece limited edition is individually numbered on the caseback.

Renewed, Recharged, and Totally Retro

Popular culture steers people to explore new and different trends. But some designs continue to work – decade upon decade – and those labeled “classic” always return to favor. Such is the case with the Fortis Marinemaster watch, originally released in the 1940s. The Marinemaster remained in the Fortis lineup for decades, and the Marinemaster Chronograph was popular well into the 1970s when the quartz movement revolution forced the watch industry to rethink its mechanical future. The industry bounced back in a big way, as did many of the classic watch designs of the 20th century.

The Fortis Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph watch is true to the look of its predecessor in most ways including the shape of the lugs, the piston-style chronograph pushers and the unidirectional, graduated dive bezel. Similarities extend to the dial, too, including the orange sub-dials; the two-tone 30-minute sub-dial; the shape of the hands and hour markers; the minutes-and-seconds track, and the tachymeter scale at the outside of the dial.

Enthusiasts will note that the position of the 30-minute counter and the 60-second counter are reversed compared to the ’70s iteration, which is a result of the configuration of the new automatic movement – the Fortis caliber F-2020 – an ETA 2892-A2 base with a Dubois Depraz 2020 chronograph module.

Other than the upgraded movement, the most notable difference is the watch’s exhibition caseback that provides a view of the movement in action. The water resistance of the Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph is 165 feet (less than the original, which was over 650 feet).

The three-part case is made of stainless steel and measures 40 mm in diameter. Another nod to the original is the inclusion of domed acrylic on the front that is made of PMMA – the same type of acrylic that was used before the advent of synthetic crystal. The watch is mounted on a black calfskin strap with white stitch and employs a traditional clasp buckle.

If the reliability of a modern watch is more appealing than the quirks of vintage, or a vintage model simply eludes capture, consider the Fortis Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph watch. High Flyer or History Buff, This Chrono Delivers

Flieger is the German word for pilot, or airman. In English, the word “flieger” is commonly associated with pilot watches; this is, in part, because Germans were among the first to design pilot-centric watches for the civil aviation sector in the 1930s, but also because many of the definitive look-and-feel characteristics of modern pilot watches can be attributed to German manufacture.

The Fortis Flieger Automatic Chronograph is a fine example of a modern airman’s watch. The two-part case is 40 mm in diameter and made from sandblasted stainless steel. The caseback is screw-down and stamped with the Fortis emblem. Scratch-resistant anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial and allows for an ample view of the counters and hands thanks to the narrow bezel. A large knurled crown, stamped with the Fortis crown emblem, makes adjusting the watch effortless; the chronograph pushers are equally stout and straightforward to operate.

In its day, the primary significance of the arrowhead index and flanking dots at 12 o’clock on the dial was to provide upward orientation of the dial during night flight. For pilots, it still does, and for non-pilots, the ubiquitous index appears as an essential design element. The black dial features Arabic numerals and indices coated with Super-LumiNova phosphorescent paint for excellent illumination in the dark. Luminous paint also appears on the sword-shaped hour and minute hands, whose relative thickness width-wise makes it easy to read the time over top of the sub-dials.

Since function is the chief purpose of a pilot watch, the chronograph hands on the Fortis Flieger are all painted orange; this way the elapsed seconds, minutes and hours can be calculated with relative ease. The distinct positioning of the sub-dials suggests that this flieger contains a Valjoux 7750 movement, and indeed it does. The distinctive layout has the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, the 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, and the continuous-seconds counter at 9 o’clock. Two apertures placed side by side at 3 o’clock display the day and date.

To accommodate the three-plate Valjoux 7750 movement, the case is 15 mm thick and water resistant to 330 feet. A complementary padded black leather strap with white stitching draws out the white-on-black contrast of the dial. The prong-style buckle is personalized with the Fortis emblem.

A Match Made in Flight: The Fortis B-42 and the Valjoux 7750

Before pilots had chronographs integrated into their wristwatches, they typically carried separate stopwatches for use in navigation. When the time-only wristwatch was eventually combined with a chronograph, pilots were able to satisfy both functions with one device.

Fortis fuses these two primary functions in its Fortis B-42 Pilot Professional Chronograph from the company’s aviation collections, and what better movement to salute this match made in flight than the famed Valjoux 7750, the veritable workhorse of mechanical chronographs, which like the pilot watch, is renowned for its function-over-form simplicity.

The Valjoux 7750 was introduced in 1974 and features prominently in contemporary chronographs. It differs from the traditional column-wheel chronograph in that it uses a different mechanism to control the switching functions, which include starting, stopping and resetting. The significant advantage of the 7750’s design is in efficiency, both in terms of ease of assembly and ease of maintenance.

Fortis customizes the winding rotor of this Valjoux 7750 with blue engravings including the Fortis logo; the words Since 1912 Swiss commemorate the company’s founding year, while World’s First Manufacturer of Automatic Wristwatches commemorates one of the company’s finest achievements. All of this can be viewed through the watch’s exhibition caseback.

To accommodate the movement’s three-plate construction (main plate, calendar plate and chronograph plate), the two-part stainless steel case is 42 mm in diameter by 16 mm thick. The sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on both sides and the caseback is screw-down. The oversized, screw-down crown adds to the watch’s overall water resistance of 660 feet.

The distinctive chronograph counter layout of the Valjoux 7750 has the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, the 30-minute counter at 12, and the continuous-seconds counter at 9. The chronograph hands, meanwhile, are painted orange so that elapsed seconds, minutes and hours can be calculated with relative ease.

White numbers and indices provide excellent contrast against the matte, black dial. Plenty of Super-LumiNova coats the numerals, hour markers and hands. Cockpit Fundamentals

The earliest pilot watches were basic time-tellers with a decidedly crucial purpose: to provide pilots with accurate timekeepers that had clear and simple readouts by which they could tell time quickly and easily. In terms of precision, the Pilot Professional houses a 25-jewel ETA 2836-2 automatic movement, which beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and utilizes an Incabloc shock absorber to protect the balance. Another important characteristic of this movement is the “hack” or “stop-second” setting mechanism: when the crown is pulled out the seconds hand stops, allowing the wearer to set the time more precisely. One of them is the Fortis B-47 Big Black, an exceptional and unique timepiece. The B-47 Big Black, limited to 2012 pieces, features a wavelike jagged bezel, similar to that of the Fortis Marinemaster. The Big Black is truly an eye catcher.

The semitransparent dial of the Fortis Big Black offers an open view of the date and day disks — which are bilingual in German and English. In contrast, the watch’s skeletonized hands present a much more delicate appearance. The actual day shows in white letters at nine o’clock and the date at three o’clock. The remaining days can be seen in a grey shading under the dial. I think this is a totally unique feature that distinguishes the Big Black from all other timepieces I’ve seen. To round this off, a highly reliable and precise automatic ETA 2836-2 caliber ticks away inside the watch case.

Not only is this large steel black PVD case water resistant to 660 ft which makes it a perfect diving watch, it is a hefty large watch that makes a statement of strength and of power. In addition, I like that the sapphire crystal is anti-reflective on both sides, but that preference is probably personal, since I like to photograph watches, and this feature makes it much easier to get a good shot.

The multi-colored uni directional bezel beckons its wearer with a call to focus on the more positive emotions in life through words such as love, live, sing, and dance, as well as others. The unique artwork carries over to the bracelet in the form of hands displaying faces in their palms and the watch caseback conveys another inspirational message, reminding its wearer to “live your time and determine the content.”
